The perfect coffee-to-water ratio for a moka pot is generally 1:10 (1 gram of coffee to 10ml of water). However, this can be adjusted based on your personal taste preferences and the specific characteristics of your coffee beans.
Unlike drip coffee makers, moka pots require precise measurements because the brewing process is pressure-based. Using the correct ratio ensures:
Different coffee origins and roast levels may require slight adjustments:
This calculator provides the optimal starting point for your moka pot brewing. Here's how to use the results:
For a 6-cup (300ml) moka pot, you need approximately 30 grams of medium-fine ground coffee and 300ml of water. This assumes a standard 1:10 ratio.
It's best to fill the filter basket completely for optimal pressure and extraction. If you want less coffee overall, consider using a smaller moka pot rather than reducing the coffee amount.
Use a medium-fine grind - finer than drip coffee but coarser than espresso. If using a Baratza Encore grinder, set it to around 15-18. See our complete grind size guide.
Bitter coffee usually results from over-extraction caused by too much heat, too long brew time, or too fine a grind. Reduce heat, remove from stove when gurgling starts, and try a slightly coarser grind.
Room temperature water is standard, but using pre-heated water (just below boiling) can reduce brew time and minimize metallic taste. Pour carefully to avoid burns if using hot water.
